It beats catching the action on TV. If you’re game for live concerts, book your spot on the 3rd, and if you’re in for the fireworks, July 4th is the day for it.
You don’t really have to scamper around for too long for a spot if you arrive a few hours earlier at the site of choice. The fireworks are launched between Longfellow and Mass Ave Bridges, so, you can typically see them from miles and miles away. There are also plenty of good spots along the Cambridge side of the river, near BU Bridge, in front of MIT, on top of Bunker Hill, and even from Castle Island 3 miles away.
